"Grace"

In Him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace that he lavished on us with all wisdom and understanding. Ephesians 1: 7-8

The Bible says the new birth comes by faith through grace. What is grace? Let me see if I can explain it this way. Have you ever done anything wrong? Of course, we all have. Now, what happened when you thought you were going to catch it, for doing it, but the person lavished you with gifts instead? Oh, you say that has never happened to you.

Well, if we are God’s people, the God’s grace happens every day. Grace is a gift. We do not deserve it. We should not receive it. But He gives it to us anyway.

Let’s put it another way. Although you and I received Christ, we still battle our sinful thoughts and desires. Not like we used to battle them, but we still do.

Grace gives us the opportunity to grow in faith and mature in righteousness. In essence, grace allows us to fall. It also allows us to get up again and try to do it right. Ever seen toddlers try to walk? They take a step and fall. And guess what, they don’t give up. They get up and try again and again until they finally take a few steps. And when they do this, the smile that paints their entire face is precious as they realize their perseverance paid off.

This is grace. When we do something wrong, God is not standing above us with a hammer or baseball bat waiting to “Bam!” us. No, His grace is enough to carry us. In other words, God’s grace gives us the freedom to try, fall and get up again. And if we fall to the same sin, we have the same freedom to try again.

Believe me we do not deserve this grace. We deserve death. However, His grace is sufficient. His grace is plentiful. Thus, we can never out sin grace. Whenever we fall to sin, God gives us greater grace. He lavishes it on us, so we can never sin greater than the grace we have. His grace is always sufficient. (Rom. 5:20, 2 Cor. 12:9).

Finally, the child learns to walk and the parents rejoice. And finally we learn to walk free from a particular sin. When this happens, the heavens rejoice (Luke. 15:10).

Exercise

  • Describe grace.
  • Describe how we shut the alarm off inside
  • Explain difference between believer and non-believer when it comes to our conscience

Do you have an alarm going off inside right now? Do you need to take something to God or make something right with someone? Read http://www.mychurch.org/bible/RSV/1john/1/1 John 1:9 , do what it says. Then go and make it right, if you need to do this.

Prayer: God, forgive me. I know I sinned against You. Take away my sin and remove my desire for it. I cannot stop, but You can, through the power of the Holy Spirit. In Christ’s name, Amen!
